The party’s announcement came through a statement issued from Delhi on Tuesday night.

Tapasi Roy, identified as the candidate, is the spouse of Jagannath Roy, who passed away following injuries sustained in an attack on March 25, 2021.

Jagannath Roy, hailing from Paschim Salbari within the Dhupguri block of Jalpaiguri district, succumbed on March 29. During the militant incident that targeted a CRPF team in Lawaypora on the outskirts of Srinagar, two other army men also lost their lives on the spot.

Addressing the media on Wednesday morning, as per Indian Express, Tapasi said, “I did not expect to be made a BJP candidate. My husband gave his life for the country and I want to dedicate my life to Dhupguri and its people. I will work towards making Dhupguri a subdivision and build a hospital here. A lot of work also needs to be done for the development of women and girl children here.”

She further added, “I am seeking the benevolence of the people of Dhupguri and am committed to laboring on their behalf.”
