“Will Not be Accepted Under Any Circumstances”: CM Omar Abdullah Opposes Uniform Friday Sermons in Jammu Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday criticised the BJP over the proposed introduction of uniform Friday sermons across mosques in the Union Territory, accusing the party of interfering in Muslim religious affairs.

In a post on X, Abdullah called on the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board chairperson to stop the initiative, describing it as unacceptable.

“This is an unacceptable attempt by the BJP to interfere in the religious affairs of Muslims and will not be accepted under any circumstances. The BJP appointed Chairperson must immediately halt this misplaced attempt to please her masters,” he wrote.

The Waqf Board is pushing for a system under which Friday sermon topics would be determined in advance and approved by a committee of preachers.

If implemented, Jammu and Kashmir would become the first region in the country to introduce such a mechanism.
