SRINAGAR: In Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, just 35 per cent of 14 to 18-year-olds enrolled in schools can complete the arithmetic test in Mathematics, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023.

The report reveals that a mere 57 per cent of students in this age group in the district can apply the unitary method for everyday calculations. “Among all youth aged 14-18 years in Anantnag, 77.3 per cent could read at least a Standard-II level text in the ASER reading test, 35.7 per cent could do at least division in the ASER arithmetic test, and 86.7 per cent could read at least sentences in the ASER English test,” states the ASER 2023 report.

Furthermore, the report indicates that overall, 53 per cent of students could calculate time, 54.8 per cent could measure the length (hard) when the starting point is moved, and 57.6 per cent could apply the unitary method for everyday calculations.

“Of those who could read at least Standard-I level text of the ASER reading test, 74.5 percent could read the text on a medicine packet and answer at least 3 out of 4 questions about it,” the report notes.

Regarding practical tasks, the report states that in the Anantnag district, of those who could do at least subtraction in the ASER arithmetic test, 71.3 per cent could manage a budget, 45.6 per cent could apply a discount, and 13.6 per cent could calculate repayment. It is noteworthy that males outperform females across most of these application-based tasks.

The ASER 2023 ‘Beyond Basics’ report was released on Wednesday in New Delhi, focusing on youth aged 14 to 18 in rural India. In Jammu and Kashmir, volunteers from the Human Welfare Foundation conducted the ASER 2023 survey in Anantnag. (KNO)
