SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a youth for misusing social media by posting threatening video against a businessman.

A police spokesman in a statement said, “Also, a case against various fake social media account handlers has been registered for anti-national activities.”

“Sopore police received a complaint from a reputed businessman from Bemina stating that a social media user Abu Huzaife (claiming to be from Gujranwala Pakistan) had uploaded a threatening video against him for his association with a political party on his Facebook account. On receipt of the complaint, a case under relevant sections of law was registered and an investigation was initiated,” said the spokesman.

“During the course of the investigation, Sopore Police with the help of Cyber Police have been able to identify the fake social media handler. He has been identified as Rayees Ahmad Mir @ Danish son of Feroz Ahmad Mir resident of Brath Kalan,” he said.

“He has been also found involved in misusing of social media platform by creating fake accounts and posting seditious and provocative posts for antinational activities which are highly prejudicial in maintaining law and order,” he added.

“He has been arrested and shifted to the police station where he remains in custody,” said a police spokesman in a statement.

“Notably, Police have identified many social media accounts and persons who are misusing social media for anti-national activities. Those who create fake accounts on social media to run anti-state propaganda and spread fake information will be identified and dealt under law. Sopore Police with the help of Cyber Police is in the process of indenting the antecedents of some 200 such accounts who have been propagating anti-state content in order to create law and order problem in the area. Such people shall be summoned shortly,” he said.

“General public are advised not to circulate any anti-national contents uploaded by miscreants which has a tendency of creating law and order problem. Any person found indulging in such activities will be dealt with strictly under law,” said a police spokesman in a statement.
