Arrest of a local youth by police sparked protests in Shopian town this afternoon with agitated protestors demanding release of the youth. All business establishments were shut as soon as protests erupted in the area.

According to locals, police arrested a local youth Mohammad Qasim Mengnoo son of Abdul Qayoom Mengnoo of Bonabazar Shopian from his shop at Batpora Shopian.

As the news about his arrest spread, various youth assembled at Main Chowk Shopian and held protest demonstrations against the arrest. “Shopkeepers downed their shutters and within some minutes a civil curfew like situation was observed in the whole town”, one eye witnesses told a local news agency, KNS. Youth marched through the streets peacefully shouting anti police and anti government slogans.

A local youth who was part of protest, wishing anoymity said, “Until Qasim is released, the shutdown and demonstrations will continue in the town.”  “It is Jammu and Kashmir Police that is responsible for all this; they don’t allow people to live peacefully”, he alleged.
