SRINAGAR: The Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5-kilometre-long strategic link on the Srinagar-Leh highway, is awaiting formal approval from New Delhi for public opening. Nearly six months have passed since the tunnel, constructed by APCO Amarnathji Tunnelway Pvt Ltd, achieved its Commercial Operation Date on July 24, 2024.

Despite the completion of the Rs 2,400 crore project, officials said that they are still awaiting the official go-ahead for its public inauguration.

A source familiar with the development revealed that the tunnel might be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month, although an official date is yet to be confirmed.

“The Z-Morh Tunnel is fully ready for public use, but we are still awaiting formal approval from New Delhi. We hope to receive the go-ahead soon,” an official said.

He noted that the tunnel could significantly boost tourism and ease travel hardships. “This tunnel will make our lives much easier, especially during the harsh winters. It’s frustrating that it’s still not open to the public despite being ready for months,” he said, adding, “We hope the government acts quickly, as this is crucial for our local economy and daily commuting.”

The Z-Morh Tunnel, built under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, is expected to enhance connectivity between the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg and the rest of Jammu & Kashmir. Located at an altitude of 8,500 feet, the tunnel will provide all-weather access and strengthen military logistics to Ladakh, a region critical to national security.

Initially conceived by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012, the project’s construction was later undertaken by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). Originally scheduled for completion in October 2024, the tunnel was recently opened on an emergency basis to clear traffic stranded due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions on the highway.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to play a vital role in ensuring safer, year-round connectivity for civilians and military operations, eliminating snow-related disruptions that often block the Srinagar-Leh highway. (KNO)
