The Zojila Tunnel, located amidst mountainous terrain on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, is set to become one of the region’s longest and most critical tunnels.

Officials said the excavation marks a major step towards completing the Zojila Tunnel. “MEIL’s success in overcoming the challenging terrain is a significant achievement,” they added.

“We are proud to have reached this important milestone. The Zojila Tunnel project will not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the development and security of the region,” a senior official from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. said.

Notably, MEIL is constructing the tunnel using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Upon completion, the tunnel will provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, reducing the travel time from 3.5 hours on the Zojila Pass to just 45 minutes.

This all-weather connectivity will aid in the financial and cultural development of the Srinagar and Ladakh regions. (KNO)
