Army on Monday claimed it killed five militants in Kangan area of Ganderbal district. The encounter was reported from a forest.

Army said 24 Rashtriya Rifles personnel who carried out the operation in Machkin Nulla of Kangan did not suffer any damage.

Defence spokesman Col J S Brar said that Army had an input that some militants were wandering in the forests  of Machkin Nala, falling in the  Kangan  belt of Ganderbal district. He said that an operation was started on Monday morning which ended on the killing of all the militants. Brar termed the killing of militants a success for the Army but he did not identify the slain militants saying’ “it will be done by the police”.  He said there were recoveries from the spot including five AK assault rifles, 1 UBGL and other ammunition.

A police spokesman said the operation was outcome of a a specific information that police and 24 RR jointly carried out in Phali Nard Wanghat forest area. Of the five militants, he said, four were identified as Abu Bakar, Abu Khalid, Murtaza and Abdul Gazi. The identity of the fifth one is being ascertained and the militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen.
