SRINAGAR: The Higher Education Department responded to low Common University Entrance Test  (CUET) -based admissions in numerous degree colleges across Jammu and Kashmir by exempting 64 Government Degree Colleges from mandating CUET scores for the academic session 2024-25.

The department noted that many students opted not to seek admission through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) due to geographical constraints and infrastructure availability.

Under Secretary to the government Sanjay Kumar Tickoo, in a communication, said that 35 government colleges in Jammu division and 29 in Kashmir region were exempted from CUET-based admissions for the academic session 2024-25.

“Due to very low CUET-based admissions in some government degree colleges during the previous year, the situation was reassessed this year after consultations with all stakeholders. It was decided to identify colleges where students did not prefer CUET-based admissions due to geographical constraints, topography, and infrastructure availability, and where CUET-based admissions were very low last year,” the communication reads.

CUET-2024 is scheduled from 15-05-2024 to 31-05-2024 in thirteen mediums across India for evaluating candidates seeking admissions to various undergraduate programs.

The Higher Education Department noted that CUET-based admissions in remote colleges such as Marwah, Tangdhar, Gurez, and Mahore put students at a disadvantage.

“The Nodal Principals of Jammu and Srinagar have provided lists of 35 Government Colleges in Jammu Division and 29 Government Colleges in Kashmir Division for exemption from CUET-based admissions, allowing them to admit students for the academic session 2024-25 without CUET scores,” it adds.

It further states, “In the interest of aspiring students from Jammu and Kashmir divisions, admissions to these respective colleges for the academic session 2024-25 will not require CUET scores.”

However, admissions in these colleges will be centrally managed through the e-SAMARTH portal based on 12th class marks—(KNO)
