A Pakistani militant has been killed in the ongoing encounter at district police lines (DPL) Pulwama on Saturday, Kashmir Police Chief Muneer Ahmad Khan said.

Khan said the identity of the slain has not been ascertained yet.

Earlier, reports said that loud explosions were heard even as militants, who have positioned themselves in a building near the Special Operations Group (SOG) camp, continued to fire on the forces.

They said that two-quarters have been set on fire by the forces.

Khan told Kashmir Life that all the police and other forces personnel have been evacuated safely. He said one building in the DPL premises caught fire due to a cylinder blast after heavy exchange of fire.

The encounter is going on and so far a Pakistani militant has been killed, he said.

As reported earlier, in a pre-dawn attack, at least three heavily-armed militants stormed the police lines where hundreds of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF personnel are stationed, police officials said.

After forcing their entry into the police building, the militants resorted to indiscriminate firing and lobbed grenades. Initially, a Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel succumbed to injuries. Later, two more CCRPF personnel succumbed to injuries.

Pakistan based militant outfit, Jaish-e-Muhammad has claimed the responsibility of the attack.
