With clear sky overnight, twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu experienced coldest night of the season last night.

While Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus3.8 degrees Celsius – four degrees below normal, Jammu recorded a low of 7.4 degrees Celsius – three degrees below normal, met office said.

However, there was some respite in the cold in cold desert of ladakh. Leh town recorded a minimum of minus 10.5 degrees celisus which was nearly two degrees less than yesterday.

Similarly, Kargil recorded a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius, which was far less than the normal temperature.

Banihal, 125 kms from Srinagar on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, also recorded coldest night of the season as the tem perature dipped below the freezing point at minus 0.9 degrees Celsius.

Other cities of Jammu region recorded a low of one degree Celsius (Bhaderwah), 3.2 (Udhampur), 3.7 (Batote) and 8.2 (Katra).

Recordings from Pahalgam, Qazigund, Kokernag, Gulmarg and other areas of Kashmir valley were not available with the met office.

Weathermen said due to clear night sky, the minimum temperatures in the state are likely to drop further till Friday.
