Since early morning Friday, North Kashmir’s Palhalan district was shut as a mark of protest against the death of a militant in Thursday’s during a gunfight in Sopore.

The deceased militant was a resident of the area. The protests spread to adjoining areas and after Friday congregation prayers the protests grew severe. The police and paramilitary forces had to used force to disperse the protesters.

People resorted to stone pelting and clashes took ugly turn when a local, Muhammad Yaqoob Bhat was critically injured in the police action. He has been rushed to Srinagar where he is said to be critical.

After the news of Yaqoob’s condition reached the area, the protesters grouped again and targeted the men in uniform and their vehicles. During the clashes, protesters caught hold of a forces vehicle, 9244/JKO2F and set it ablaze. The authorities have rushed extra contingent of police and paramilitary forces to the area. Police sources told Kashmir Life that the  situation is under control.
