On the anniversary of 5 January 1949 UNSC resolution on J&K the chairperson of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (m) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Monday said on January 05 1949 UN Security Council passed a resolution giving the people of Jammu and Kashmir a right to decide about their political future through a free and fair plebiscite.

“Sixty Six years have passed since but the people were not provided with an opportunity to exercise their right to decide about their future,” he said in a statement issued by Hurriyat Conference (m).

The importance of UN resolution lies in the fact, he said, “the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir form the guiding principle while finding any resolution to Kashmir dispute. Non-implementation of the resolution led to the continuation of the dispute and resulted in three major wars between India and Pakistan besides loss of innumerable precious lives and property in both the countries as well as in Kashmir.” “Now when the two countries have decided to resume the dialogue process to resolve all pending issues including Kashmir dispute, we would like to remind both the countries to keep in view the underlying spirit of UN resolutions and recognize the centrality of the will and aspirations of the people while addressing and reaching any agreement on the resolution of this dispute.”

Mirwaiz said keeping in view the historical perspective of the dispute, it is important to make the people of J&K as partners of the dialogue process on this issue and also it is the responsibility of both the countries to devise a mechanism to include the people of J&K in the dialogue process.
