SRINAGAR: A special court in Anantnag on Thursday sentenced five persons, including a married couple, to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for trafficking a commercial quantity of contraband.
Police spokesperson in a statement said, “Principal Sessions Judge Anantnag, Manzoor Ahmad, awarded the sentence to Mohammad Rafiq Bhat, Anayat Ullah Bhat, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Mubeena Banoo all residents of Soaf Shali Kokernag and Sajad Ahmad Ganie, a resident of Hangal Gund Kokernag. Each convict was also directed to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.”
“The judgment, pronounced on May 7, 2025, followed their conviction under Sections 8/20(c) read with Section 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) in FIR No. 63/2022 registered at Police Station Kokernag. The case involved the illegal possession and trafficking of five kilograms of Charas, which qualifies as a commercial quantity under the NDPS Act. The court found the accused guilty of jointly engaging in narcotic trade and held them responsible for organised drug peddling,” it reads.
The sentencing is among the key rulings in Anantnag this year as courts continue to address drug-related offences.
