SRINAGAR: As many as 19,418 accounts have been opened under the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate (MSSC) scheme in Jammu and Kashmir, with an aggregate financial corpus of Rs 202.23 crore, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said 16,695 of these accounts were opened through the Department of Posts, of which around 20 per cent were registered through rural post offices, while the remaining accounts were opened through urban post offices.
A further 2,723 accounts were opened through authorised banks covering both rural and urban areas, he said.
The minister was responding to a question on the number of accounts opened by women and guardians of minor girls under the scheme in Jammu and Kashmir, their distribution across rural and urban financial centres, and steps being taken to increase awareness among low-income women households.
Chaudhary said the Mahila Samman Savings Certificate, 2023 was operationalised for two years, from April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2025.
For wider publicity of small savings schemes, the Department of Posts and authorised agency banks conduct outreach programmes and display the salient features and benefits of the schemes at post offices and bank branches, he added.
