Lokhande, who is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Department of Home under the Ministry of Home Affairs, will take over as CBSE Chairperson in the Ministry of Education. He succeeds Rahul Singh, a 1996-batch Bihar cadre IAS officer, and will hold the post in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.

In a simultaneous administrative reshuffle, the ACC has appointed Rahul Singh as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

The appointments were approved by the ACC and notified through an order issued from New Delhi on June 2, 2026.

Lokhande’s appointment places an experienced senior bureaucrat at the helm of the country’s premier school education board, which oversees examinations, curriculum implementation and affiliation of thousands of schools across India.
