A team of Excise Department Thursday raided two Dhabas in Kunzur Tangmarg of North Kashmir’s Baramulla District and seized 25 bags of poppy straw (Fukki) and six bottles of illicit liquor.  During the raids two persons were arrested, while as one is absconding, reads an official statement.

Giving details, Deputy Excise Commissioner Kashmir, Gulzar Ahmad Shabnum said that on a specific tip of, a team of officers of Excise Department led by Excise & Taxation Officer raided the Dhabas of these accused persons and seized 25 bags of Poppy straw (Fukki) from the Dhabbas of Ab. Razak Shah, Mustaq Ahmad Mir and Ab. Ahad Magrey and six bottles of illicit liquor from the possession of Ab. Ahad Magrey.

An FIR has been lodged against them in Police Station Kunzar and action under Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 has been initiated. Police has started search of Ab. Razak Shah who absconded from the spot.

The Deputy Excise Commissioner has said that the Department of Excise was working on a multipronged strategy to eradicate the menace of Narcotics and take stringent lawful action against those involved in cultivation, stocking, smuggling, selling, purchasing and using Narcotics, besides curbing illicit liquor trade and use of liquor in public places. He further said the joint complaint cells have been established in Central, North and south Kashmir by the Department of Excise, Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) and Crime Branch (CBK) Kashmir which were coordinating with the enforcement squads of these Departments and the public in receiving complaints against the persons involved in unlawful trade of Narcotics. The Department of Excise, NCB and CBK have intensified their joint operations in this regard across the valley and action has been initiated against various involved persons.

The Department of Excise has also destroyed Poppy cultivation on hundreds of Kanals of land during the current kharief season and Bhung destruction has also been conducted on more than 1000 kanals of land across the valley so far with the active cooperation of locals, the Deputy Excise Commissioner further said.
