SRINAGAR: Twenty-six stalls showcasing Kashmir’s high-value GI-tagged and languishing traditional crafts were set up at SK Park, Srinagar, as part of the September edition of the Handicrafts and Handloom Department’s ‘Know Your Artisan’ initiative, organised alongside the J&K International Film Festival.
The event brought master artisans into direct contact with tourists, buyers, students and the general public, providing them an opportunity to display their work, demonstrate traditional skills and market their products directly.
The department said the initiative attracted visitors, including tourists, art enthusiasts, students and members of the public, with a focus on promoting awareness about Kashmir’s traditional crafts and their authenticity.
The School of Designs, Kashmir, conducted live demonstrations, while a dedicated ‘Try Corner’ allowed visitors to experience pottery, papier-mâché and needlework.
Students from various schools and colleges also participated in the event, interacting with artisans, observing live demonstrations and attempting craft-making activities. The department said the programme provided them first-hand exposure to the skills and precision required in traditional craftsmanship.
Live music was organised in collaboration with the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages.
A spokesperson for the department said the ‘Know Your Artisan’ initiative was aimed at increasing awareness about the heritage value and authenticity of Kashmir’s traditional crafts while strengthening direct links between artisans and consumers.
The department said the response to the September edition had encouraged it to take the initiative to prominent tourist destinations and other high-footfall locations to expand artisans’ visibility and market access.
It also appealed to tourists, buyers and craft enthusiasts to purchase authentic Kashmiri handicrafts and support efforts to preserve and revive the region’s traditional craft heritage.
