SRINAGAR: Around 77 per cent of rural households in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency have been provided with Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), while 275 water supply schemes remain under various stages of execution, the Union government informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Responding to an unstarred question by MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, Minister of State for Jal Shakti V Somanna said approximately 2,44,337 of the constituency’s 3,18,600 rural households have been connected with tap water so far.
The ministry said Baramulla has a total of 525 water supply schemes under the mission, involving an estimated investment of Rs 2,073.50 crore. Of this, Rs 1,233.28 crore has been spent so far. While 250 schemes have been physically completed, the remaining 275 are at different stages of implementation.
According to the government, all pending schemes are expected to be completed by December 2028 in line with the extended timeline of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, which was approved by the Union Cabinet in March this year. The restructured mission focuses on strengthening the rural drinking water supply sector across the country.
The ministry reiterated that drinking water is a State subject and that planning, implementation, operation and maintenance of drinking water supply schemes are the responsibility of the respective State and Union Territory governments, while the Centre provides financial and technical assistance under the mission.
It also informed the House that Jammu and Kashmir was allocated Rs 18,514.25 crore under the first phase of JJM, of which Rs 6,496.48 crore has been drawn. Under JJM 2.0, the Union Territory has been allocated Rs 905.74 crore for 2026-27, with a mother sanction of Rs 116.06 crore issued so far.
