Incessant rain for the past 18 hours have caused a flood-like situation in Kathua district, which is situated along the banks of the Ujh river. The water level in the river rose abruptly to the danger mark, forcing the authorities of the Sewa Hydel Power Project-II to open all four gates of the dam.

An official said that twenty-nine people stranded in Kathua district after flash floods and heavy rains were rescued on Monday.

“A total of 29 persons, including six women and 10 children, were rescued from various flood-hit areas of Kathua district during overnight operations,” an official said.

“Water level in Ujh river in Kathua increased and a family got trapped which was rescued by police & volunteers. Meanwhile,9 persons who got trapped in Billawer rescued so far. Efforts on to rescue remaining 2,” wrote J&K police on Twitter late Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, the authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Doda district as a precautionary measure and also set up control rooms in view of heavy rains in the Jammu region since the last two days.
