Three army personnel, including an officer, were injured in a fresh gunfight with militants at Matribugh area of Shopian district in southern part of Kashmir on Thursday.

Sources said that a joint team of Army’s 62 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at village Matribugh, Zainpora in the southern district of Shopian around 2.30 am following a tip off about the presence of some militants.

As soon as the joint team of forces intensified the combing operation, the militants hiding in the area opened fire triggering off an encounter, they said.

In the initial gunfight, an army Major along with two soldiers sustained bullet injuries, they said.

All the injured troopers have been airlifted to military’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar for treatment.

Two to three militants are believed hiding in the area, sources said.
