Army Major, soldier killed in Shopian gunfight

An Army Major and a soldier were killed and another was injured in a gunfight between forces and militants in Zaipora, Matribugh village of Shopian district on Thursday.

The army officer and the soldier were injured during initial exchange of fire. They were airlifted to Srinagar army hospital where they succumbed to injuries. The deceased have been identified as Major Kamlesh Panday and soldier Tenzin, reports said.

One more injured soldier was being treated in the army hospital at Badamibagh. He has been identified as Kripal Singh.

Three militants are believed to be holed up in a building in the area, reports said.

The operation, which is currently underway, began after the forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of the militants in the area.
