SRINAGAR: In a midday attack on a minority picket in Zainpora belt of south Kashmir, three policemen were killed. The fourth cop who was also injured in the attack is stated to be critical.

Police sources confirmed the attack. “We are in the process of collecting details,” one officer said. “We will share the details after we have enough information.”

The cops were guarding a cluster of homes where minorities are living. It was not immediately known if the cops were four or more than that. One unconfirmed report said there has been some weapon snatching as well. The injured cop has been rushed to the hospital.

Zainpora that is part of Shopian district is a tehsil headquarter.

Police have identified the slain trio. One is Anees Ahmad, a constable (480/Spn), a resident of Kulgam town. Another is Abdul Majid, a senior grade constable (193/SPN), a resident of Ganderbal. Another is Merajuddin, a constable (477/SPN), a resident of Hajin in Bandipora. The police spokesman also identified the fourth cop who was critically injured as a constable, Hamidullah (860/SPN), a resident of Anantnag.

“Area has been cordoned off and search has been initiated in the area,” the spokesman added.
