SRINAGAR: A total of 3,480 dormitory beds were constructed in Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) in Jammu and Kashmir during the three years from 2023-24 to 2025-26, according to data presented in the Lok Sabha.
The figures were provided by Minister of State in the Ministry of Education Shri Jayant Chaudhary in response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1290, answered on July 27, 2026. The question was raised by Rambhual Nishad and related to the construction of hostels in Navodaya Vidyalayas.
The annexure to the reply showed that 2,112 dormitory beds were constructed in Jammu and Kashmir during 2023-24, followed by 1,176 beds in 2024-25 and another 192 beds in 2025-26.
Across the country, the data recorded 10,320 dormitory beds in 2023-24, 6,456 beds in 2024-25 and 7,392 beds in 2025-26, taking the three-year total to 24,168 beds. Jammu and Kashmir’s total of 3,480 beds accounted for about 14.4 per cent of the beds listed nationally during the period.
The Union Government said construction of permanent Navodaya Vidyalaya buildings, including hostels, is an ongoing process dependent on factors such as identification of suitable land, completion of lease formalities in favour of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), submission of drawings and estimates by construction agencies, availability of funds, requisite approvals and the successive growth of individual Vidyalayas.
According to the reply, NV infrastructure is developed in three stages—Phase-A, Phase-B and Phase-B (balance)—based on student growth and the efficient use of available infrastructure. Phase-A includes the school building, kitchen and dining facilities, along with partial dormitories and staff quarters. Phase-B provides additional partial dormitories and staff quarters, while Phase-B (balance) covers remaining dormitories according to actual requirements.
The reply did not provide any separate hostel construction figures for Ladakh in the three-year state/UT-wise annexure.
The Ministry also clarified, in response to the specific questions concerning Sultanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, that 288 hostel/dormitory beds had been constructed there in 2023-24. During 2025-26, construction was started for 24 beds in GB Nagar and 48 beds in Sitapur-I in Uttar Pradesh.
