SRINAGAR: A total of 35,961 houses have been completed and delivered to beneficiaries in Jammu and Kashmir under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) and PMAY-U 2.0 since the inception of the scheme, the Centre informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
According to the data presented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, 45,982 houses have been sanctioned in the Union Territory so far, of which 43,907 have been grounded. The Centre has approved Rs 734.44 crore in assistance for J&K, with Rs 544.40 crore released so far.
Of the total sanctioned houses, 3,398 have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, which was launched in September 2024 as the revamped version of the urban housing scheme. The new scheme aims to support one crore additional eligible beneficiaries across urban areas and is being implemented through four components — Beneficiary Led Construction, Affordable Housing in Partnership, Affordable Rental Housing and the Interest Subsidy Scheme.
District-wise, Jammu has the highest number of sanctioned houses at 7,638, followed by Baramulla with 5,273 and Anantnag with 4,148. Srinagar has 3,809 sanctioned houses, while Bandipora has 3,569.
Among completed houses, Jammu accounts for 5,588, followed by Baramulla with 3,878, Anantnag with 3,483 and Srinagar with 3,278.
During 2025-26 and 2026-27 up to June 2026, 2,126 houses were sanctioned and 5,069 were completed across the Union Territory.
The ministry said completion timelines generally range from 12 to 36 months, depending on the scheme component and the detailed project reports. Delays can occur due to factors including availability of encumbrance-free land, statutory clearances, beneficiaries’ ability to arrange funds and availability of the state share.
The government has also encouraged convergence of PMAY-U with schemes including Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, Ujjwala Yojana, PM Surya Ghar, Ayushman Bharat, PM Vishwakarma and other programmes to improve the delivery of basic amenities to beneficiaries.
The ministry said the PMAY-U scheme period has been extended up to September 30, 2026, for completion of under-construction houses and release of funds.
