SRINAGAR: As many as 40,076 households in Jammu and Kashmir have benefited from rooftop solar installations under the Centre’s PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, according to data placed before the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
The figures, covering beneficiaries up to August 5, 2026, show that Jammu and Kashmir accounts for around 0.8 per cent of the 50,26,066 households that have benefited from rooftop solar installations under the scheme across the country.
The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the PM-Surya Ghar scheme, launched in February 2024, aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households by 2026-27.
Among neighbouring Union Territories, Ladakh recorded 2,072 beneficiary households, while Chandigarh had 1,392 and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu recorded 1,171.
Nationally, Gujarat reported the highest number of beneficiary households at 11,18,156, followed by Maharashtra with 10,96,989 and Uttar Pradesh with 7,37,104.
The Ministry said the country had installed 288.58 GW of renewable energy capacity as of June 30, 2026. Solar power accounted for the largest share at 162.15 GW, followed by wind power at 57.44 GW, hydro power at 57.24 GW and bio-power at 11.75 GW.
The Centre has also assessed a requirement of around 60.63 GW (336.4 GWh) of energy storage capacity by 2030 to facilitate renewable energy integration. This includes 18.98 GW (128.40 GWh) from pumped storage plants and 41.65 GW (208 GWh) from battery energy storage systems.
To strengthen domestic solar manufacturing, the Government is implementing the Production Linked Incentive scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules, with an outlay of Rs 24,000 crore. Letters of Award have been issued for setting up 48,337 MW of fully or partially integrated solar PV module manufacturing capacity.
The Government has also mandated domestic sourcing of solar PV cells and modules under certain schemes, including PM-Surya Ghar, PM-KUSUM Components B and C, and the CPSU Scheme Phase-II.
For energy storage, the Centre said the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage aims to establish a domestic manufacturing ecosystem for 50 GWh of advanced chemistry cells, with a budgetary outlay of Rs 18,100 crore.
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, financial incentives have been awarded to 15 companies to promote domestic manufacturing of electrolysers with a combined capacity of 3,000 MW per annum.
