The government Monday revealed that as many as 506 people lost their lives while another 4611 got injured in at least 3221 road accidents that took place across the J&K during this year up to ending July.

In response to a question posed by Mubarak Gul, MLA, Eidgah, the government furnished details giving district-wise break-up for the last three years.

Jammu tops the list with highest number of accidents (786) during the said period followed by Udhampur (264). The district with the least number of accidents is Shopian (32). Srinagar fares third with 247 accidents. The total number of injured persons was 4611.

During last year, 992 people lost their loves while 8043 got injured in at least 5861 accidents. In 2013, government disclosed, 990 people died while another 8681 got injured in as many as 6469 accidents.

Towards this, the government said, an amount of Rs 95.05 lakh has been paid as ex-gratia relief to victims of the road accident at Rs 25, 000 – to next of kin’s of the deceased at Rs 10, 000 – to seriously injured and Rs 5,000 to those who have received minor injuries.
