Strongly condemning the police action against senior Hurriyat Conference Jammu Kashmir (HCJK) leaders immediately after the seminar on Thursday, the Hurriyat spokesperson has termed the arrest of the leaders as “anti-democratic” and attack on the personal freedom of an individual.

According to a statement issued to KNS, he said Hurriyat had organized a seminar in connection with “Hafta-e-Shuhadaa (martyrs’ week)” to pay tributes to Shaheed Muhammad Maqbool Bhat and Shaheed Muhammad Afzal Guru, which concluded peacefully. As the leaders left the hotel in which seminar was organized, a large contingent of police pushed them into police vehicles and forcibly lodged them in Kothi Bagh Police Station,” he said.

Among those arrested were Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mushtaq-ul-Islam, Shabir Ahmad Dar, Muhammad Yusuf Naqash and Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, it added.

The spokesperson said the calendar issued by Hurriyat Conference with regards to ‘Hafta-e-Shuhahdaa’ will not get affected and the programmes will take place as per scheduled. “The Hurriyat activists and pro-freedom people will leave no stone unturned to make the martyrs’ week successful,” he said.

“Hurriyat Conference makes it clear that so-called tactics by state administration can neither weaken our resolve nor suppress the freedom movement,” Hurriyat spokesperson added.
