Three militants were killed in an encounter in a joint operation by Police, Army and CRPF at Karaiwa, Manloo, falling in jurisdiction of police station Shopian. One Army major and a Jawan of 44RR laid their lives in this encounter, a police statement said.

“As has been reported earlier, on a specific information regarding presence of militants a joint operation was launched by Police, 44-RR and 14-BN CRPF at Kariwa, Manloo in Shopian yesterday. In this encounter three militants were killed. The bodies of the militants along with the weapons have been recovered from the encounter site,” the statement read.

Police said that the militants belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and have been identified as Asif Ahmad Wani son of Abdul Razaq of Drabgam-Rajpora, Pulwama, Shabir Ahmad Gorsi son of Farooq Ahmad Gorsi resident of Regward Keller, Shopian and Abdul Haq Malik son of Ghulam Hassan resident of Arwani, Bijbehara. These militants were involved in number of militancy related incidents, the statement added.

“Asif was formerly a Jaish Militant who had joined HM outfit. He was District commander of HM. Abdul Haq Malik was involved in the killing of a policeman in Arwani area last year,” it said.

One Army officer and a trooper of 44-RR died in the encounter, it further said.
