Police on Wednesday arrested six timber smugglers while transporting illicit timber on their horses in Kulgam, a police statement said.

The statement said that acting on a tip off, in the wee hours a police party headed by SHO Kulgam Irshad Ahmad laid a naka at village Chancer. Six timber smugglers were arrested while transporting the illicit timber on their horses.

The arrested timber smugglers were identified as Abdul Salam Bhat son of Abdul Gani, Mohammad Iqbal Wani son of Ghulam Mohammad, Showkat Ahmad Ahanger son of Abdul Rehman, Aijaz Ahmad Ganie so of Bashir Ahmad, Mohammad Rafiq Lone son of Ghulam Nabi, all residents of Kakran, D.H Pora.

Police confiscated six horses and seized the large quantity of timber that was being smuggled.

Police registered a case FIR number 37/2015 under section 379 RPC, 6 Forest Act and investigation was taken up. Later, the recovered timber along with the horses was handed over to forest department for confiscation procedure.
