Minister for Education Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Thursday informed the House that the government constructed 654 Primary School buildings, 63 Middle school buildings and 4379 additional classrooms in the last three years in Kashmir.

Replying to a question of Ghulam Nabi Monga, the Minister said 3039 Primary and Middle schools in the state are being run in rented buildings majority of which are in cities and towns as the cost of construction in the cities is very high. The government has taken up this issue with the Centre and it is committed to addressing our needs, he added.

Replying to a supplementary question of Surinder Mohan Ambardar, the Minister said the upgradation work Government Higher Secondary School, Baramulla is going on and it would be completed this year.

Replying to a supplementary question of Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo related to the construction of schools in seismic zones, the Minister said the new hostels and structures are being constructed by the government by taking into consideration the requirement of earthquake-prone areas.
