SRINAGAR: Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, on Wednesday informed the Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly that a total of 81 parks and gardens are currently functional in the Bahu Constituency of Jammu district.
Replying on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to a question raised by Legislator Ch Vikram Randhawa, Sharma said that of the total number of parks, 49 have been transferred to Urban Local Bodies in accordance with the provisions of the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act, which mandates the devolution of powers to local governance institutions.
The Minister further stated that 11 parks and gardens in the constituency are presently being maintained by the Department of Floriculture. “An amount of Rs 264.98 lakh has been allocated over the last two years for their upkeep and maintenance,” he informed the House.
Legislators Satish Kumar Sharma and Narinder Singh also raised supplementary questions during the discussion, seeking details on the condition and development of these recreational spaces.
Sharma assured the Assembly that the government remains committed to the preservation and enhancement of public parks and gardens, recognising their importance for community recreation and environmental sustainability.
