Voting will take place for 90 seats in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18, September 25 and October 1, the EC said.

Votes will be counted on October 4 for both the assemblies, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar told a press conference.

The last assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in November-December 2014 and these will be the first assembly elections in the erstwhile state since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

He said that following the delimitation, Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, including 74 general, 6 reserved for SCs, and 9 for STs.

The number of electors in the region stands at 87.09 lakh, with over 20 lakh youth eligible to vote, marking a significant milestone in democratic engagement. He added that the long queues at polling stations during the Lok Sabha elections is a testament to the democratic spirit and a triumph of the ballot over the bullet.

He sais that out of 87.09 lakh voters, 42.6 lakh are women, across 90 constituencies

Kumar emphasised that the successful Lok Sabha polls demonstrated a shift from apathy to action, setting a positive tone for upcoming assembly elections. “We expect even better voter turnout in assembly polls in JK and expect women to participate in higher numbers.”
