The incarcerated Hurriyat Conference (g) Secretary General (I) and chief of Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah, on Saturday paid tributes to slain Asiya and Neelofar on their 7th anniversary and termed the heart-wrenching Shopian incident as a “national tragedy”.

In a statement issued to press this afternoon, Shah said, “the honourable and dignified nation can never tolerate the disrespect or attack on the chastity of their daughters and sisters.”

Shah hailed the people of Kashmir particularly those of Shopian for strongly protesting against the dastardly act and demanding punishment for the rapists involved.

Lashing out at the then rulers of the state, Shah said, “they did everything to protect the culprits involved in the shameful act.”

Criticising CM Ms Mehbooba Mufti for “shedding crocodile tears over the incident and expressing fake sympathy with the victims’ families during opposition”, Shah said, “after coming to power, she (Mehbooba) has maintained a complete silence on the incident thereby proving that she is just another servant of New Delhi.”

Connecting Asiya-Neelofar incident with Tabinda Gani, Kunan-Poshpora, and other similar incidents, Shah appealed to the people to observe May 30 as ‘Women’s Security Day’ in memory of Asiya and Neelofar of Shopian.

“People should take part in public gatherings and organise prayers on May 30, to recollect the unfortunate incident of rape and murder of Asiya and Neelofar,” he said.

“Till we live under Indian occupation, unfortunately such shameful and dastardly incidents are bound to happen,” Shah added.
