Advocate General of Jammu and Kashmir Resigns, Paving Way for New Appointment

SRINAGAR: In a significant development following the establishment of a new political government, Advocate General of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, D C Raina, submitted his resignation to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday. According to sources, this decision was taken by Raina to allow the incoming political government the opportunity to appoint a new Advocate General.

Raina, who was appointed as the first Advocate General of the Union Territory on November 1, 2019, has had an impressive career, serving in the same capacity thrice during the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir—in 2008, 2016, and 2018. His expertise spans multiple areas of law, including Constitutional, Service Matters, Civil Laws, and Taxation Laws.

Sources added that while the resignation enables the new government to propose a candidate for the post, the final decision rests with the Lt Governor under the revised Business Rules. These rules indicate that the Lt Governor is not obligated to follow Cabinet recommendations regarding the appointment. Instead, the Lt Governor will make the final decision after consultations with the present government.
