National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah questioned Shahid Afridi’s statement on Kashmir being ‘celebrated in sections of the Indian media’, underlining that the former Pakistan cricketer clearly supported freedom for Kashmir.

Taking to social networking site Twitter Omar wrote: “I don’t get what sections of the Indian media are celebrating WRT #ShahidAfridi’s statement. Forget what he said about Pakistan’s 4 provinces, the byte I saw clearly had him supporting freedom for Kashmir & criticising human rights violations so how is that a victory for India.”

Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi on Wednesday late evening also accused the Indian media of misconstruing his statements regarding Kashmir.

Taking to social networking site Twitter Afridi wrote: “My comments are being misconstrued by Indian media! I’m passionate about my country and greatly value the struggles of Kashmiris. Humanity must prevail and they should get their rights(sic).”

“My clip is incomplete & out of context as what I said before that is missing. Kashmir is unresolved dispute & under brutal Indian occupation. It must be resolved as per UN resolution. Myself along with every Pakistani support Kashmiri freedom struggle. Kashmir belongs to Pakistan (sic),” he tweeted.

Earlier, Afridi while addressing the students at British Parliament said “Don’t give Kashmir to Pakistan or India either. Let Kashmir become its own country. Humanity is a big thing. Human are being killed there (Kashmir). It hurts to see humans are being killed whatever religion they may belong.”

“Pakistan doesn’t need Kashmir; it is not able to even handle the four provinces it has,” Afridi said in a video posted on social media.

However, it is not the first time that Shahid Afridi has expressed his views on Kashmir. The former cricketer had earlier urged the United Nations to intervene in Kashmir to stop the killing of Kashmiris.

“Appalling and worrisome situation ongoing in the Indian Occupied Kashmir. Innocents being shot down by oppressive regime to clamp voice of self-determination & independence. Wonder where is the @UN & other int bodies & why aren’t they making efforts to stop this bloodshed?” he had written on Twitter, earlier.
