Cockroach in fruit cake.

Days after a cockroach was found in Biryani served by Hatric restaurant Hazratbal, a similar one has surfaced — this time in ‘pancake’ served by the renowned Bakery shop of Srinagar, Janta Bakery.

The incident happened when a banker did his routine bakery shopping from the main bakery outlet. “In the morning when I opened the cake, I was left terrified when I found a cockroach embedded at its bottom,” the banker told Kashmir Life.

Instead of eating ‘sickening pie’ quietly, the banker decided to ‘name and shame’ the act “for instilling a larger sense of responsibility in baking community”.

When contacted, the owner of Janta Bakery said that the incident has occurred “out of a pure mistake” — thereby making certain quarters to react that the much-touted hygiene adherence by bakers is just a ‘hoax’.

“Look, we accept our mistake,” says Fayaz Ahmad, the co-owner of the bakery shop. “We are in this business for last 40 years and throughout we have maintained our credibility based on the quality of products we serve.” Fayaz cited the “meticulous cleanliness” the business house maintains at its HMT factory as a point in his defence. “In spite of maintaining all high-end cleanliness, some breaches do happen. But yes, there is no margin for error in our business. And keeping the same thing in view, we tender a public apology.”

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Food Safety, Hilal Ahmad said that the department has already set up an inspecting team in market to check the quality of food products. “Even if something like this has happened because of mistake, it can’t be still accepted,” he said. “We are dispatching our team to look into the matter. Expect some action soon.”
