The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has initiated process of registration of rag pickers who have been issued cards to bring a semblance of organization in this unorganized workforce.

“The aim of engaging these rag pickers is to segregate waste material at primary points, which is at household level. It is planned to depute these rag pickers along with SMC sweepers to segregate non-biodegradable which is going to help achieve goal of clean city,” a statement from Srinagar Municipal Corporation said Saturday evening.

On this occasion, the statement said, “German Ambassador in India, Michael Steiner, along his wife Ms Eliese, who are here on a private visit visited Landfill site Achan.”

Steiner appreciated SMC and expressed satisfaction on seeing the landfill site for mechanism of  its garbage disposal, the SMC statement said.

Steiner was quoted as having said, “this is one of the best landfill sites in India and he would be recommending a team for extended cooperation to learn and look at the best practices of solid waste management in Germany so that the same shall be replicated in Srinagar city for its better and healthy development.”

Minister Of State for Housing & Urban Development Department, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, on the occasion, said, “the required assistance from the recommended team shall be importantly taken into consideration to adopt the latest technology in Solid waste management.”

“This move shall definitely help in touching the new standards of waste management,” said Mir.

The statement said that Commissioner SMC presented the status and practices of solid waste management by Srinagar Municipal Corporation and explained the scientific disposal of waste material.

“SMC commissioner pledged on the occasion to make Srinagar among the best managed cities in terms of solid waste management,” the statement maintained.

“The SMC is in process of distributing areas to the registered rag pickers for segregation,” said Chief Sanitation Officer Manzoor Turray. “The motive is to enhance city ranking in sanitation and cleanliness. The process is also aimed at educating people regarding waste segregation.”
