SRINAGAR: The Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) on Thursday said it will seek court permission to enable its president and Baramulla MP, Er Rashid, to participate in the Vice Presidential election scheduled for 9 September.
AIP’s Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, currently in Delhi, said the party has directed its legal counsel to apply before the competent court, arguing that it is both Rashid’s “democratic right and constitutional duty” as a Member of Parliament to be part of the electoral process.
As part of preparations, Chairman of AIP’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee and MLA Langate, Sheikh Khursheed, met Rashid’s counsel, Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi, in Delhi to discuss the legal strategy and ensure the application is filed without delay.
Inam expressed hope that authorities would facilitate Rashid’s participation “in the spirit of democracy and constitutional propriety.”
