SRINAGAR: Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi has urged the Jammu and Kashmir government to make reservation rationalisation, particularly the concerns of Open Merit candidates, a priority during the Legislative Assembly’s session beginning Monday.
Un Nabi demanded that the Cabinet Sub-Committee report on the issue be released publicly and tabled in the Assembly to enable a transparent discussion. He said the report should be accompanied by the data and criteria used to formulate its recommendations.
According to Un Nabi, the concerns of Open Merit candidates should be addressed without affecting the legitimate rights of reserved communities.
He said the AIP favoured a population-based reservation framework, an approach that AIP president and Baramulla MP Er Rashid had proposed in Parliament, with representation rationalised at the district, divisional and Union Territory levels.
Un Nabi also called for a substantive debate on the report in the Assembly and sought a time-bound roadmap for implementing its recommendations.
He said greater transparency was necessary on an issue affecting the future of thousands of young people, while maintaining that both fairness for Open Merit candidates and the rights of reserved communities should be protected.
