Altaf Ahmad Wani, 34, who was killed by CRPF near his residence in Saidapora Eidgah on Wednesday afternoon, was a lone bread earner for his family and father of four daughters.

Altaf son of Abdul Ahad Wani was a shawl weaver by profession and the only support to his family of seven.

As per eyewitnesses CRPF personnel of 73rd battalion opened fire in Zoonimar area on people who were on road. Some youth were playing cricket on the road when a CRPF party in three vehicles came rushing. “There was no stone pelting in the area however some cricket playing kids throw some pebbles on the rushing CRPF cavalcade as they had to remove their wickets on seeing the cavalcade,” the eyewitnesses told Kashmir Life. They added that some hundred yards from the place the CRPF personnel fired on Altaf who was walking on the roadside and he received a bullet on back piercing in his heart. Two more received bullets in the same incident. The locals said.

However the IG CRPF, VS Yadav while confirming the death of Altaf said, “Our­ men were surrounded by pelters and to get out of this situation, they fired which resulted in the death of a Youth, Our men were compelled to fire.”

The injured were later shifted to SKIMS Soura where Altaf was operated upon. But the doctors who attended him informed Kashmir Life that he was very critical and before dying he had cardiac arrest twice.

A top police official told Kashmir Life that the CRPF party belonging to 73rd battalion was rushing towards SKIMS to donate blood for their colleagues who were injured in the Bemina attack in the morning. Pertinently the personnel belonged to the same battalion which was attacked by the militants in Bemina early in the day.
