Amarnath Yatra Pilgrim Dies After Snakebite at Jammu Base Camp

   

SRINAGAR: A 42-year-old Amarnath Yatra pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh died after he was allegedly bitten by a snake at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu, officials said.

The deceased was identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Officials said Kumar suffered a snakebite at the Yatri Niwas in Bhagwati Nagar around 2:30 am and was immediately shifted to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Jammu for treatment.

Despite efforts by doctors, his condition deteriorated and he later succumbed during treatment, they said.

Officials said the body was shifted for post-mortem examination and other legal formalities before being handed over to the family.

The Bhagwati Nagar base camp serves as the main transit facility in Jammu for pilgrims undertaking the annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra to the holy cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.

Authorities said necessary preventive measures are being taken at the camp to ensure the safety of pilgrims and avoid such incidents in the future.

The annual pilgrimage attracts thousands of devotees from across the country who travel through the traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal district to reach the cave shrine.
