Srinagar:

Amid shutdown, the slain Sumo driver who was killed after militants attacked army personnel boarding his vehicle in Shopian was Friday laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Kuchdora village of Shopian district.

Reports said that a large number of people took part in the funeral prayers of slain driver Nazir Ahmad Sheikh amid pro-freedom and pro-Hizbul Mujahideen slogans.

Sheikh was driving soldiers returning from a daylong anti-militancy operation in Shopian when militants ambushed the vehicle on Thursday. Three soldiers were also injured in the attack.

Witnesses said that mourners carrying Sheikh’s body for burial shouted slogans in favour of Kashmir’s freedom and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant outfit.

Meanwhile, Shopian town and adjacent areas observed complete shutdown to mourn the death of Nazir.
