On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, Adbee Markaz Kamraz (AMK) reiterates its pledge and reminds the government of its promises about teaching of Kashmiri language as evaluative subject in 9th and 10th classes, and also the issue of shortage of teachers of Kashmiri language in schools and colleges.

The AMK members say, “Over the years these issues have been taken up with the government at various levels, but nothing has happened beyond promises.”

As per a statement AMK reiterates that it will revitalize its ‘language movement’ and form a comprehensive strategy for the promotion and preservation of Kashmiri language and literature. “Kashmiri language is a symbol and guardian of collective identity of Kashmiri culture and civilization and we have resolved to mobilize public opinion for protection of their mother tongue.”

AMK and civil society, an eleven member committee comprising of eminent members of civil society has been setup to take up different issues of the language with the government. AMK believes that protection of Kashmiri language guarantees protection of  Kashmiri culture and civilization.

Proclaimed by the UNESCO in 1999, the International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21 worldwide to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world. Thus the importance of mother tongue and support to movements for their preservation and protection has the universal acclaim.
