The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has lifted restriction on apple import through Chennai Port.

This move will increase revenues for the port and will also bring down the cost of apples by a few rupees. Statistics indicate that the Chennai Port imports more than 50 per cent of apples, media reports said on Thursday.

Experts said that such a decision shall affect the apple market in Kashmir.

The rates in Delhi market for apples are already low and it will further deteriorate the market, they said.

First New Delhi ‘eased’ saffron imports “devastating” Kashmir saffron sector, then almonds and walnuts. Now apples are to be imported in a big way. It will be mayhem for Kashmir’s apple industry, said an exporter in Valley.
