The Lawmakers in one voice on Tuesday asked deputy chairman “what the role of an MLA is?” (MLA: Member Legislative Assembly)

Speaker Legislative Assembly, Kavinder Gupta, is not present in the house today and Deputy Speaker, Nazir Ahmad Gurezi, is managing the house since morning.

As soon as the Question Hour ended today, all the Lawmakers but ministers and their deputies, stood up in the house and asked Gurezi to “define what the role and power of an MLA were.”

As the Lawmakers pressed their demand, Gurezi intervened and said, “they are right and whenever any untoward things happens, they are the first ones to face the heat being representatives of the people.”

Gurezi directed the government that the Lawmakers need “proper hearing”. “They are here for the interest of common people.”

“Define the powers,” BJP Lawmaker, R S Pathania, told the house, “get some statutory power which will make it the powers effective so that work is done on ground.”

The Lawmakers led by NC’s Ali Mohammad Sagar asked government to “define the role of MLA in projection and execution of projects”.

As the din continued, Law Minister Ab Haq Khan responded, “No one can restrict role of an MLA.”

Khan maintained that whether it was an issue of development or Law and Order, “MLA is the only person who is held answerable by people of its segment.”

He said that whenever GoI rolls out its schemes, “priority is to take MLA in confidence so that the schemes are successful in its implementation.”
