The J&K Government has submitted a proposal to Government of India to construct 20125 community bunkers in the border villages in Jammu district. It will cost Rs 10.06 crore, once approved, the government said on Friday.

However, the government has only approved only 60 concrete bunkers at an overall investment of Rs three crores. All these bunkers are part of the pilot project to understand the efficacies of these bunkers if and when the rival armies shell each-others’ positions.

The government ruled out that it was considering shifting of border population. It said the populations shift to safer areas in the hinterland once the shelling takes place.

The government also revealed that the incidents of border shelling have increased from 190 in 2014 to 222 in 2015 killing 14 and 16 civilians respectively.

The number of forces personnel killed in the shelling also went up from four to six but the number of injured civilians reduced from 101 to 71 in the two years.
