In a shocking revelation, the Jammu and Kashmir government Monday admitted that 3828 infants died at Srinagar’s GB Pant Hospital over the last four years.

This roughly means that three infant deaths were reported daily at the hospital. The figures were released on the floor of legislative council by the minister for medical education, R S Chib who informed the house that the Director SKIMS, Soura who was the enquiry officer in the case, has submitted his report which is under active consideration of the government.

“Death is death. It has to be controlled. The chargesheet has been filed against the then medical superintendent GB Pant Hospital, Javied Chaudhary, under J&K classification control and applied rules,” Chib said.

This year, 636 infants died at the hospital while 886 infant deaths were reported last year. In 2010, the number of infants who died at the hospital was 882. During 2008 and 2009, 830 and 594 infant deaths were recorded respectively.

Opposition PDP castigated the government for making Chaudhary a scapegoat in the case. “How can you hold a poor doctor responsible for the entire mess, when there is an existing hierarchy in place?” PDP lawmaker, Murtaza Khan, asked.

In his defense, Chib informed the house that the action can’t be taken since the matter was sub-judice, “Matter is pending in High Court. Besides, there is a committee pending in lower house,” Chib said.
