Attack on Scribe’s Mother: Kashmir Journalists Appeal CM to Intervene, Get Accused Punished

Kashmir Journalists Corps (KJC), a forum of Kashmir based journalists, Friday strongly condemned the murderous assault on the family of freelance Aljazeera journalist Baba Umar by the land mafia at Hyderpora.

Umar’s mother suffered grievous head injuries while her three year old niece has slipped into a shock following the attack.

The incident occurred on November 8 when local land sharks armed with sharp weapons and iron rods attacked Umar’s mother when they were constructing a boundary wall of their plot at Gulbahaar Colony.

She received over two dozen stitches on her head and was shifted to hospital for treatment. “The land sharks, who are affiliated with a political party, also demolished the wall and vandalised the site,” the statement said.

Police have registered the case of attempt to murder under section 307 RPC and nabbed the prime accused. “Two accused are still on the run.”

Taking a strong note of the incident, the statement said, “KJC urges the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to personally intervene into the matter and order a high level probe so that culprits are brought to book at the earliest.”

KJC also urged police to speed up the trial and arrest the absconders as soon as possible.

It has decided to take the issue up with several journalistic bodies and civil society groups at all levels.

“KJC is also in touch with the legal experts in order to frame a fool proof case against the accused so that they are brought to book,” the statement added.
