SRINAGAR

Scores of people Monday staged a massive protest against drug mafia in Press Enclave Srinagar and alleged that police inaction has encouraged the drunkards, drug addicts and drug mafia to the extent that they stabbed a 7th class student when he was buying milk from a shop.

Protestors displaying the injuries suffered by the13 year old student Majid Nazir Sofi at the hands of drug addicts alleged that a woman in Rehmania Colony of Jogiwan area of Amda Kadal Srinagar is running a brothel cum drug business where hundreds of youth from different areas of Old City as well as from Upper Town visit during evening hours.

“That woman who is popularly called ‘Aunty’ supply drugs, cannabis, brown sugar and liquor to visiting youth and she is the source of waywardness in the area,” one of the elderly person told CNS.

He said that a few days back they apprehended two drug addicts and handed them over to police. “A few days back, some of the drug addicts were thrashed by locals who next day stabbed a 7th class student and injured him critically,” he said.

The protestors alleged that despite repeated requests, police has failed to take any action against the said woman and his husband. “Drug addicts after consuming liquor and drugs in the area assemble in our locality and pass indecent comments on passerby ladies. We demand stern action against these drug addicts and the woman supplier should be booked and taken to task,” they said adding that youth from Bemina, Rainawari, Fathekadal, Noorbagh, Dalal Mohalla and Batamaloo visit the house of the woman to procure drugs and liquor.

A top police official told CNS that respectable citizens of the area should visit their nearby police station and lodge a formal complaint. “People should identify the drug supplier and those who consume it. Police would certainly initiate an action as we are for the protection of the people,” he said.
